Handbuilding Hacks – Slabs Made Simple

Not every project needs the wheel! Slab building is one of the most versatile (and underrated) pottery techniques.

But here’s the catch: slabs like to warp if you don’t treat them right. To keep them flat, roll your clay evenly and compress both sides with a rib. This aligns the clay particles and helps prevent cracking or curling in the kiln.

Want clean edges? Use a ruler or wooden guide when cutting. Want texture? Press in leaves, lace, or carved stamps before assembling.

Top tip: Let your slabs rest for a few minutes after rolling before you build. Slightly firmer clay is easier to handle and holds shape better.
